An energy source in its original form, before any conversion: coal in the seam, gas at the wellhead, sunlight on a panel, uranium in fuel rods. The distinction from secondary sources such as electricity and hydrogen, which must be manufactured from primary ones, runs through every national energy statistic, and forgetting it is the classic way to double-count a country's energy use.
