The tradable proof behind renewable electricity claims: one certificate is issued when a renewable source generates and delivers one megawatthour to the grid. Utilities show certificates to comply with portfolio standards, using ones they earned or ones bought from independent producers, which lets the renewable attribute of power be bought and sold separately from the electricity itself.
