The pumped-storage station commissioned in 1984 in caverns inside Elidir mountain beside Llanberis in Snowdonia, north Wales, known locally as Electric Mountain and run by First Hydro Company, a division of Engie. It stores about 9.1 gigawatt-hours and is prized for speed: a single generator reaches full load from standstill in about 75 seconds, and the whole station can reach 1,800 megawatts from spinning reserve in about 16. As pumped storage it consumes more energy pumping than it returns, selling response and peak power rather than generation.
