The 800 mile, 48 inch crude oil pipeline across Alaska, in service since 1977 and operated by Alyeska Pipeline Service Company for its oil company owners. It has moved 18 billion barrels of oil since startup, and its measure is throughput rather than megawatts; daily flow today runs far below the late 1980s peak, which is the long arc of the North Slope told in one number.
