On 20 April 2010 the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, working the BP Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico, exploded and sank, killing eleven workers; four million barrels of oil flowed from the damaged well before it was sealed, the largest spill in the history of marine oil drilling. The disaster reshaped offshore drilling regulation and stands as the modern measure of what deep-water oil can cost when it goes wrong.
