The engineer who proved the Texas salt domes held oil. The leading United States expert on salt dome formations, he leased land on the Spindletop dome from the Gladys City Company in 1899 and drove the drilling that blew in the Lucas gusher on 10 January 1901, the well that opened the modern petroleum industry.
