Calvin Fuller was an American chemist at Bell Telephone Laboratories whose expertise in diffusing chemical impurities into silicon crystals, a doping technique he had developed for earlier transistor research, proved to be the missing piece that let Daryl Chapin and Gerald Pearson turn Russell Ohls photovoltaic discovery into a genuinely efficient solar cell. Fuller worked out how to introduce controlled amounts of lithium and later boron into silicon wafers to create a durable and reproducible p-n junction, the specific technique that let the Bell teams 1954 solar battery reach roughly six percent efficiency, a dramatic improvement on any earlier photovoltaic device. His doping process, developed originally for the transistor, became foundational to solar cell manufacturing as well, connecting two of Bell Labs most consequential inventions through the same underlying chemistry. Fullers contribution is a central, if less publicly recognized, part of the team credited with inventing the modern silicon solar cell.
