The Appleton industrialist who put waterpower behind the Edison system. Owner of the Appleton Pulp Mill, the Appleton Paper Mill and the Appleton Gas Light Company, he drove the venture that started the Vulcan Street Plant on the Fox River on 30 September 1882, the world's first hydroelectric central station, which lit his mill and his own home.
