Viktor Kaplan (1876-1934) was an Austrian mechanical engineer who invented the Kaplan turbine, an adjustable-blade propeller turbine able to run efficiently at the low heads and high flows common on rivers that earlier turbine designs could not exploit well. He developed and patented the design in 1913 while a professor at the German Technical University in Brno, and the turbine that bears his name became one of the standard designs for large low-head hydropower installations worldwide.
