The Pelton wheel is an impulse turbine: one or more free jets of high-speed water strike spoon-shaped buckets mounted around the rim of a runner, discharging into open, aerated space rather than pushing against a sealed casing the way a reaction turbine does. The U.S. Department of Energy notes Pelton turbines are generally used for very high heads and low flows, the opposite end of the hydropower range from the Kaplan turbine's low-head, high-flow niche. The American inventor Lester Allan Pelton patented the design on 26 October 1880.
