Faraday Demonstrates Induction

In the basement laboratory of the Royal Institution in London, Michael Faraday wound two coils onto an iron ring and showed that a changing current in one coil induces a current in the other, succeeding on 29 August 1831. Electromagnetic induction is the working principle of the generator and the transformer, which is to say of nearly all electricity since, and the ring apparatus itself, in effect the first transformer, is still held by the Royal Institution.
