On 11 March 2011 the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami knocked out power and cooling at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on the Japanese coast, melting three reactor cores. The accident led Japan to idle its reactor fleet, Germany to legislate a full nuclear exit, and safety regulators worldwide to reassess extreme external hazards.
