At dusk on 9 November 1965 a faulty protective relay at the Adam Beck station in Ontario tripped a 230 kilovolt line, and the failure cascaded through the interconnected grid, blacking out all of New York State, parts of seven neighboring states and much of Ontario and Quebec: thirty million people, 800,000 of them in the New York subways. Power came back overnight. The blackout created the modern reliability institutions, among them the Northeast Reliability Council and the New York Power Pool, and it taught the industry that an interconnected grid fails as one machine.
