Adopted on 12 December 2015 by 196 parties at the COP21 climate conference, the Paris Agreement committed the world to holding warming well below two degrees Celsius while pursuing 1.5. Because roughly three quarters of greenhouse gas emissions come from energy, the agreement became the organizing goal of the global energy transition, the benchmark against which national energy policies are now measured.
