The stack of alternating discs of two dissimilar metals, separated by pasteboard or cloth dampened with brine, with which Alessandro Volta gave the world its first steady supply of electricity. Announced in a letter of 20 March 1800 to the president of the Royal Society of London, the voltaic pile was the first device to deliver continuous current rather than static discharge, the ancestor of every battery, and the opening of the age in which electricity could be made on demand.
