Battery Cell

A rechargeable battery that stores energy by shuttling lithium ions between electrodes, first commercialized by Sony in 1991 on foundations laid by Stanley Whittingham, John Goodenough and Akira Yoshino, who shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for it. Lithium-ion cells power phones, laptops and electric vehicles and, in grid-scale banks, have become the fastest-growing form of electricity storage.

Stanley Whittingham (who demonstrated the first working lithium rechargeable cell in the 1970s) and Akira Yoshino (who built the first commercially viable lithium-ion cell in 1985); Goodenough's own specific, well documented contribution is the lithium cobalt oxide cathode.
