The world center for cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, established in 1957 within the United Nations family after the Atoms for Peace proposal of 1953. It promotes and safeguards nuclear energy at once: the same agency that assists new nuclear programs also inspects them against the diversion of material to weapons, and it received the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize.
